I have seen a smart metre in action, the device actually tells you how much power you are using all the time and it tells you how many killos of CO2 gas is being released to power your home every hour. And it tells you in real time how much money is being used to power your house.
By turning different devices on and off you can see how much power they are actually using by looking at the change in power usage.
The metre has 2 parts a wireless display unit and a smart box that automatically sends a metre reading to power company. The wireless display unit can be placed anywhere in the home.
The thing that uses the most power is still the light bulb because it stays on for a long time despite there being super bright LED lights that only use 10 watts. You can have a 2500 watt kettle on for 2 minutes and that would cost about one pence.
I am very pleased that we are switching to LED bulbs because they last a very long time and use half the power of a normal light bulb
